Home Security

I guess this is making its rounds on the internets. Interesting way to broach the subject... although (of course) I could've written it much better. For the record, I have no problems with legal immigration. We are a nation of immigrants. However, there are rules in place to ensure chaos doesn't ensue.

Now, on to the cheap copy/paste:

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors.

I've done all the things you don't like to do.

I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:

You are Required to let me stay in your house

You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan

You are Required to educate my kids

You are Required to provide other benefits to me and to my family(my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself.

I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!!!

I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?!

Only in America ..if you agree, pass it on (in English). Share it if you see the value of it.
If not blow it off......... along with your future Social Security funds, and a lot of other things.

First off, you ever notice that these protestors are constantly parading around with Mexican flags? Yeah, not helping to win me over.

That was a lousy analogy. There's a legal channel for immigration, there's not a legal channel for becoming part of somebody else's family just because you want to.

I agree that Mexicans should learn English. We shouldn't have to learn Mexican.

This character seems to be mocking the concept that illegals do many jobs that Americans are unwilling to do. Why? It's definitely true in many cases. I'm not trying to build a case for illegals, but it's a fact.

Another very serious point that isn't being addressed is that as long as we treat our border with Mexico as a permeable membrane, we are extremely susceptible to terrorists smuggling in whatever the hell they want.

You know there are scads of Texans in these "border patrols" just sitting around waiting to shoot illegals crossing the border. Texas sucks.

Yeah, it's not exactly the same, but illegally entering the country and illegally entering your house are both illegal.

I don't see it as mocking. I see it as making the excellent point of "Why are so many people willing to accept or make excuses for this criminal behavior just because they do bad jobs?" Personally, I think the "doing jobs American's don't want" is complete BS. I can't think of many jobs that I want to do. I vote that people can only receive welfare after we're completely out of cabbage-picking and chicken-plucking jobs.

we are extremely susceptible to terrorists smuggling in whatever the hell they want.

Definitely. Even though I despise it on principle, A few million illegals don't really affect me too much besides the strain on social services. Porous borders are going to bite us in the ass.

You know there ... "border patrols" just sitting around waiting to shoot illegals crossing the border. Texas sucks.

I don't get what you're trying to say. I think border patrollers and other LEO should be able to do their job rather than just jotting down notes about illegal activity or telling someone to turn back so they can be more successful the following night. I'm not saying that everyone needs to be shot, but we have to be effective.

Have you ever checked out Mexico's punishments for illegal immigration? Have you looked at the restrictions place on legal immigrants? Pretty harsh.

Mike, maybe you should just stop making analogies - I'm afraid it's simply not your strong suit. This one doesn't work at all.

So is jacking off in public.

Legal immigrants can take care of anything illegal ones can - perhaps the focus should be on that aspect of our policy.

I have no respect for anyone who comes to the US and won't (not can't, won't) learn English. Especially spanish-speakers, since the languages are so similar. Would you ever move somewhere and not learn their language? Of course not - that's ridiculous.

I'm a bit confused. Are you referring to my words that you quoted after you said that? If so, those words are not an analogy. They form a statement. Both acts are illegal, right?.

Are you referring to the entire story itself? If so, I didn't write it and tried to make that clear with the quoting, "making its rounds on the interents" statement, and "now on to the copy/paste" introduction.

On a larger note, you guys really seem to get hung up when I conversationally say (for example) "98% of the time NBA fouling doesn't work" or I provide an analogy. Lighten up... it's just how I talk. :) It's how other people talk too. :)

I've said before that when I have more "serious" stats to provide, it's obvious in how I present them or the fact that I provide a source.

BTW, I fear that your analogy in "Blizzard Schmizzard" is completely erroneous. Did Schenactady really get precisely as cold as the ice planet Hoth? I sincerely doubt it. Therefore, it completely invalidates everything else you had to say. :)

Oops, hit Publish too quickly.

As to the rest of Andy's comments, I wholeheartedly agree.

When I think of big immigrant populations throughout history... yeah, they were proud of their heritage... but they were more proud of the fact that they were becoming Americans. Papa Italiano flew the American flag, proudly taught his kids English, and hung up Statue of Liberty pics in his house.

Now we have Mexican flag waving and "Press 1 for English". Where's the Melting Pot?

I'm going to make one more comment here, and then I'm pledging not to get into any more of these "I'm right!" "No, I'M right!" arguments with you.

My hometown produces more grapes per acre than anywhere else in the United States, so I've grown up in and among vineyards. High school and college kids aren't lining up to pick grapes; without migrants, it just wouldn't get done. I'm not sure how many of them are actually illegals, but I'm sure some of them are. Without them, the grapes would not get picked.

I hope you guys don't see these as arguments. I don't. I realize my views are in the minority with the regular readers here (and hell... my whole age group). That's why I really enjoy hearing how other people feel about stuff. I truly enjoy the discussions.

Now, if I may, I'll share my opinion on a couple things you said.

First, I don't think that all of your vineyards would shut down if the vineyard owners followed the law.

However, I can envision the problem you mentioned and can see how it might be tough for the vineyard owners to find legal employees. There are a couple reasons for that when you think about it. The high minimum wage is one. Maybe a 16 year old kid picking grapes for an hour isn't worth $7.35/hour. Another reason is because of our welfare system. (I'm not saying abolish it, just minimize it.) What incentive does someone on welfare and government health insurance have to go pick grapes in the scorching heat?

Now, I said that I don't think the solution should be hiring criminals. If it truly works out that nobody would be around to pick the grapes, then the market would compensate. Either wine would disappear from the earth (very doubtful), or wine drinkers will still have a demand with a smaller supply, the price will go up, and the vineyard owners can afford to offer a suitable wage for the work they need. People getting minimum wage at McDonald's will realize that there's more money in the grape-picking business and go there.

Doesn't that sound reasonable? That's how it used to be done before people wanted to enact a burdensome legislative Band-Aid that only worsens the problem in the long run.

Breaking our laws and allowing chaotic immigration will not solve any problem.
